    * Kaohsiung City was rated No.1 in the evaluation of Common Wealth Magazine in three consecutive years from 2008 to 2010 in the ranking of environmental capability of all Taiwan cities. Kaohsiung City was also awarded 5 stars in the city competitiveness evaluation by Global Views Magazine in 2010, which makes Kaohsiung City the first 5-star direct-controlled municipality.

    * In 3 consecutive years (from 2008 to 2010), the Bureau had been awarded the "excellent" prizes in Environmental Protection Administration's national evaluation on the performance of air quality maintenance.

    * Kaohsiung City received the merit prize in Environmental Protection Administration's review on energy saving and carbon reduction in all counties, cities and townships in Taiwan in 2010.

    * The Bureau's environmental inspection services had been ranked as high-quality in the performance evaluation of local environmental protection authorities in 3 consecutive years (from 2008 to 2010) reviewed by Environmental Protection Administration. In addition, the Bureau's environmental testing items have received 101 certifications approved by the Taiwan Accreditation Foundation (abbreviated as TAF) and the Bureau now is the environmental protection authority that holds the most certificates in Taiwan.

    * In an evaluation report issued by the international professional institute MERCER in 2010, Kaohsiung City was ranked as the 13th Eco City in the Asia Pacific area excluding New Zealand and Australia. Also, CNN rated Kaohsiung City as one of the five Asian cities that are most suitable for cycling in 2010.

    * In order to develop low-carbon technologies, "Clean Energy Design and Planning Scheme of Kaohsiung City" has been launched. Kaohsiung City and Kitakyushu Asian Center for Low Carbon Society signed a MOU in March 2011 to collaborate for the promotion of renewable energy.

    * Create the Greater Kaohsiung as an eco city with low-carbon living zones; establish low-carbon green energy industrial park and international energy saving R&D center; promote the construction and management of Kaohsiung Carbon Neutral Platform; draw up "Kaohsiung Eco City Development Framework"; plan and establish Kaohsiung climate change adaptation fund; implement International Bonn Declaration and take steps toward a new international environment friendly city.

    * Establish a public bicycle rental system that is the first and largest, with the most vehicles and widest coverage, cheapest, and the most convenient in Taiwan. Users can rent a bike at one point and return it at another. In addition, they can pay the rent by either membership cards or agreed credit cards. From its launch to July 2011, the system had accounted for more than 270,000 journeys, which had accomplished the task of reducing air pollution by 33.6 tons and carbon emission by 399 tons.

    * Promote the electric vehicle industry and provide more subsidies for electric motorcycles and bicycles to replace old two-stroke motorcycles. The subsidies can be up to NT$19,000 ~ 25,000. Environmental Protection Administration's data in 2011 revealed that 9439 applications for subsidies were made for replacing two-stroke motorcycles and 450 applications made for replacing two-stroke motorcycles by purchasing electric motorcycles in Kaohsiung City, which were the highest numbers in the five municipalities as well as the whole country.

    * Fully integrate resources of private sectors; encourage volunteers to promote environmental protection work together, as well as establish environmental protection volunteer teams. By the end of 2010, there are in total 376 volunteer teams with 16,887members providing totally 430, 580 service hours in one year.

    * Promote environmental education. By the end of 2010, the Bureau had held 410 events for the public (with 141,128 participants) and 346 events for school staff and students (with 51,613 participants).

    * To eliminate odor problems in Fushan Village in Zuoying District, Kaohsiung Zuonan Night Soil Plant was shut down at the end of December in 2009 to fulfill the Mayor's promise to the citizens.
